Holy Matrimony is a sacred sacrament of the Orthodox Church, through which a man and a woman are joined together by God and united as one flesh. While they remain distinct persons, they become a single, living entity within the blessed union of marriage.
It is in the unity of man and woman that the fullness of human nature is revealed, as Scripture declares: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27).
This profound union in marriage serves as a reflection of an even greater reality—the mystical union of our Lord Jesus Christ with His Holy Church. Just as love binds husband and wife, so too does love unite Christ with the Church. Through this divine love, the sacrament of marriage draws us into the Kingdom of God.
As St. John Chrysostom writes, “When husband and wife are united in marriage, they no longer seem like something earthly, but rather like the image of God Himself.”
